Against the Snowstorm
The Story
Blizzard winds howl as Lena and her three-year-old son, Noah, stand frozen in the snow. Jack, her husband, and his mother brutally force them out of the house on Christmas Eve in 2000. They call Noah a useless burden and crush Lena’s dignity before driving the pair into the freezing storm. Seeking refuge, Lena rushes to her birth family, but her own mother shuts the door in her face. Fearful that taking them in will ruin her son’s future, the grandmother refuses entry. Abandoned by everyone, Lena descends into despair. Dark thoughts of suicide begin to consume her. Yet in the midst of this bleak isolation, Noah’s innocent touch reaches out to her. This simple connection awakens her will to survive, anchoring her to life when all else has been stripped away.
