The Story

Irene devotes five years to Captain Carson, treating their relationship with the intensity of a movie heroine. She memorizes his flight schedules and books tickets to ride his routes, even waking at 2 a.m. to watch his landings. Leaving her job in Seattle, she follows him to a strange city, driven by the dream that he will finally propose. Carson never returns her love. To him, Irene is merely a warm body and a place to practice what a real woman might like. The woman he truly loves is Blair, a hooker from the red-light strip whom he keeps on retainer between layovers. After five years of total devotion, Irene finds herself reduced to nothing.
