The Story

Irene abandons everything in Seattle to chase Captain Carson, waking at odd hours for his landings and memorizing his routes. She expects a public proposal in the terminal, but Carson views her only as a convenient presence while he pursues Blair, a woman he keeps on retainer. Upon learning this truth, Irene remains silent and accepts the steady affection of the neighbor who has loved her for years. One year later, Carson discovers that Blair has been mocking him and draining his resources. Left broken and penniless, he arrives at Irene’s door to beg for the chance he discarded. It is now ten months too late for his plea. Irene continues signing her marriage license without lifting her eyes from the paper.
