Losing her parents leaves the narrator in the care of godmother Aunt Sandra, where she grows up alongside the Miller brothers. Initially believing she will marry one of them, her life shifts when Lola, the maid's daughter, enters the household. The brother she loves most ultimately breaks her heart. After she departs, the Miller brothers desperately search for her to find her again.
