Forgive Me, My Mermaid

The Story

Elena lies naked on a California shore, her body broken from a violent struggle against the rocks. Blood spills from the damage to her lower body, a constant reminder that she has lost her memories, her gills, and her ability to reproduce as a mermaid. Police sirens wail in the distance as she curls up in the shadow of the rocks. A strange flutter stirs in her lower belly, a confusing sensation she cannot identify. The rising tide begins to swallow the crevice where she hides, closing in on her trapped position.
