Prisoner of the Deep
The Story
Sixteen-year-old Henry Drake witnesses his father’s murder at the hands of the one-eyed pirate Crow before crashing into the deep sea. Serena, the sea-queen, rescues him but triggers an ancient curse that covers his skin in scales and splits gills behind his ears. She grants him a mermaid’s tear to suppress the transformation for one year, demanding he locate a lost rune stone to avoid becoming a sea monster. Resurrected, Henry washes ashore on a deserted island where a primitive tribe worships him as a sea god. Two young girls cling to him constantly, yet an old man secretly warns him to prevent their pregnancy or he will be sacrificed and devoured. Meanwhile, Crow’s pirates infiltrate the tribe’s ritual, waiting for the full moon to strike. The curse accelerates inside him while pirates lurk outside. Legend suggests his ancestor, Francis Drake, remains alive and trapped in the ocean. Henry has less than a year to escape or face his fate.
