The Vanished Girl's Secret
The Story
Nathan’s hand trembles around his phone as he stares at the empty walkway. The golden afternoon light washes over the low-rise campus buildings and iron benches, casting long shadows across the paved paths. In his navy embroidered uniform, crisp white shirt, and striped tie, the seventeen-year-old boy feels a heavy burden settle on his shoulders. He is haunted by a shared memory that has persisted for months. His classmate Avery, a girl with braids and tortoiseshell glasses who once rode a mint-green vintage bicycle with a front wicker basket, vanished without a trace years ago. Now, in the sun-dappled halls of this suburban high school, Nathan cannot escape the past. The warm-toned atmosphere seems to trap him in a loop of recollection. Every passing figure reminds him of the absence. He remains frozen in the moment, watching the light gild the edges of the world while the ghost of Avery’s disappearance lingers in the air.
