An Expensive Child

The Story

Iris sacrifices her family’s vast wealth to marry Dorian, an ordinary man, but her new life quickly turns sour. Three years into their marriage, she stands on the brink of childbirth when her domineering mother-in-law, Tessa, steps in. Tessa deems their selected hospital too costly and successfully pressures Dorian into switching to a cheap clinic. Dorian, a submissive man who follows his mother’s lead, complies entirely and begins harassing his pregnant wife. Enduring severe labor pains, Iris fiercely rejects their ridiculous demands. She reaches her absolute breaking point just as her affluent father appears unexpectedly. He arrives with extravagant gifts intended for his newborn granddaughter. The arrival of her powerful parent forces a confrontation with Dorian and Tessa, challenging their control over Iris and their daughter. The dynamics shift instantly as the true source of Iris’s value becomes apparent to the couple who attempted to diminish her status through financial constraints.
