The Story

Ava Whitmore, seven months pregnant, wakes to find herself held captive by Claire Bennett. Claire injects Ava with a drug intended to induce miscarriage, but Ava’s unborn daughter Luna speaks from the womb. This voice signals the Lunar Mark, a genetic trait unique to Whitmore women. Claire and her mother Diane, a disgraced hematologist, have hunted this marker for twenty-six years. Diane seeks Luna’s cord blood because Whitmore trust law grants a board seat and voting rights to whoever holds the heir’s blood. Ava fights back using paper instead of weapons. She photographs labels, documents vents, and saves syringe barcodes to build a chain of custody. Diane, believing blood matters more than paper, misses this strategy. When Diane presents what she believes is Luna’s cord blood to the board, the lab reveals it is only maternal blood. No Lunar Marker is present. Ava survives delivery. The trust names her legal protector. Luna’s first word after birth is Safe.
