Love That No Longer Pays
The Story
Anna, a high-earning tech executive, married her college sweetheart Ethan and quietly funded his mother Deborah’s expensive cancer treatment for two years. Her generosity ends abruptly after her C-section. Deborah dismisses the hired caregiver and sets up a payment system at her bedside, charging Anna’s mother for visits to the grandchildren. Ethan sides with his mother, ignoring the fact that Anna’s surgical infection nearly kills her. Anna cuts off all financial support, leaves the family home, and retains Gordon, an old classmate, to file for divorce. The conflict escalates when Deborah and her younger son Brandon steal five hundred thousand dollars of Anna’s pre-marital jewelry and sell it. After Anna reports the crime, Deborah takes the blame to shield Brandon. Ethan, having lost his marriage and job, finally reports his brother’s theft. Brandon receives a fifteen-year prison sentence, and Ethan writes an IOU for the debt. Three years later, Anna starts a new family with Gordon and becomes a CEO.
