Mom, I don’t need your late towel
The Story
Mia, the overlooked youngest of five in a Manhattan household, has spent her life accepting hand-me-downs and silence. Her perfect SAT score triggers a painful reality check when her mother dismisses a promised embroidered cotton towel as too expensive, yet immediately funds her sister Ava’s $2,800 designer gown. The betrayal deepens when Mia is falsely accused of stealing $3,800. She returns the cash with quiet dignity and walks away from the family that never supported her. Guided by college counselor Mr. Harris, she boards a train holding only her admission letter and a torn family photo. Years pass before her mother reappears with the long-promised towel, begging for forgiveness. Mia calmly refuses the apology, noting that a broken cup still shows its cracks even after being glued. She has stopped waiting for love and now pays for her own life on her own terms.
