My Sister's Death Benefit
The Story
Maya Sterling finds herself in a desperate corner after her husband Leo dies at a construction site, leaving behind a two million dollar death benefit. She turns to her mother and brothers for support, but they respond with abuse, driven by a deep seated preference for sons. They brand her a jinx and demand that she surrender her only home. Victor Hawthorne, Leo’s former boss, steps in with a radical solution: he suggests Maya fake a leukemia diagnosis to test their true loyalty. The ruse exposes their raw greed, confirming their lack of love. Heartbroken by their betrayal, Maya reclaims her inheritance and severs all ties with the family. The consequences follow swiftly. Her brothers drown themselves in gambling debts, their wives abandon them, and her mother suffers a stroke from stress. Maya walks away into a new life, leaving her relatives to face the fallout of their own cruelty.
