Ethan consistently sides with Lucy and condones her misdeeds. To soothe his beloved, he cruelly sacrifices their unborn baby. Devastated and hopeless, Ophelia resolutely files for divorce and moves abroad. She picks up the dreams she had set aside for the marriage. Only after she leaves without looking back does Ethan come to his senses. He is left with nothing but endless remorse and lingering longing for the rest of his life.
