The Four-and-a-Half-Year-Old Lucky Star
The Story
Four-and-a-half-year-old Lulu waits on the porch, clutching a broken rabbit, after her father Ryan rejects her claims that his new wife Vanessa fell down the stairs on her own. Remembering her mother’s final instructions, Lulu calls her young uncle Julian and tells Ryan that someone is coming to collect her. She leaves the message that he should call his brother if he cannot find her, then sits alone with the stuffed animal. Her grandfather Henry arrives with three uncles to take Lulu back to the Sinclair family. Unable to believe she is favored, Lulu habitually hides food. Her young uncle stays by her side while her eldest uncle Alexander investigates the truth about the incident. Her second uncle Nathan sews the rabbit back together. However, her second aunt Rebecca worries that her daughter Harper will lose favor. Rebecca incites the children to compete for a dress at the welcome banquet and then frames Lulu for the resulting trouble.
