The Simple Mother and Her Devoted Son
The Story
Lucy, who possesses the mental capacity of a five year old, resides in the home of her mother in law, Dorothy Hayes, and her son, Luke Hayes. Luke abandons his professional career to return home and provide for his mother. When Dorothy Hayes consults a matchmaker regarding a partner for Lucy, the woman weeps and demands to remain by her son’s side, prompting Luke to vow he will never depart. He consistently shields her from external judgment, whether neighbors blame her for damaged crops or Clyde harasses her after she slips while bringing an umbrella in the rain. Grandfather Chester Hayes criticizes Luke for sacrificing his future, yet Lucy secretly hoards yams to feed her hungry son. After Luke loses his diploma, Clyde taunts Lucy until she nearly kneels before fighting back. Luke ultimately achieves success in business, secures medical treatment for his mother, and clears up all family misunderstandings.
