The Story

Best friends Leah and the narrator marry into the Harper family, wed to a fire captain and a famous surgeon. On their wedding day, a fire breaks out while the narrator, seven months pregnant, is locked in a room by her husband's first love. Thick smoke fills the air as she begs for rescue, but he dismisses her cries, claiming a cat needs saving. Leah breaks the door down to save her, yet her own husband ignores her plea for medical help, prioritizing the cat's injured tail. The narrator loses her child that day. Broken by the betrayal, she tells Leah she wants a divorce. Leah swears to leave her husband too, deciding the men are not worth a single tear. That night, the Harper brothers receive the divorce papers and panic.
